Pre-finished
The term refers to wood flooring that already has
a finish applied at the factory.
Unfinished
This refers to wood flooring that has no finish
and therefore the customer will be required to apply a finish
following installation.
Re-finishable
This refers to wood flooring which can
have a finish re-applied to it.
Tongue & Groove
The term is used to describe the composition
of each board. Individual boards have one side with a tongue
shaped section and the other side with a groove. This allows
for easy installation;
i.e. the tongue side of one-board slots into the groove
side of another board.
Floating Floor
Term which describes the laying of a floor
when it is not directly attached to the sub-floor of a
room. Instead a layer of underlay is placed between the
sub-floor and the
wood
floor which is being fitted. The tongue and groove planks
are then glued together and placed above the layer of underlay.
Semi-Solid
Wood flooring that consists of a solid hardwood
layer bonded onto layers of veneer.
Laminate
Wood flooring that has a manufactured top layer
on each plank which generally consists of various types
of wood compressed together.
Acclimatisation
Term used when flooring is placed in
the environment in which it is to be installed. This is
a recommended procedure, which allows the wood flooring
to adapt to the
conditions
and RH (Relative Humidity) levels prior to fitting.
Relative Humidity
This refers to humidity levels present
within the environment that the wood flooring is either
stored or installed. (Humidity is affected by temperature,
dampness etc
and
it is recommended that ideal RH levels are the same as
those suitable for occupant comfort).
Moisture Content
This term is used to refer to the level
of moisture contained in wood flooring. Correct content
between 8% - 10%.
Expansion Gap
Term which refers to the gap allowed around
the outside of a room between flooring and walls during
installation. Also refers to the gap which is allowed
between boards.
Cleats
This simply refers to nails.
